Volume 02: Steady Hands

A gentle return to focus with two Guatemalan coffees from Aurelio Villatoro and Arcenio Castillo, whose steady, patient work in the highlands creates the kind of clarity that only comes from years of careful repetition.

Curator's Note

This month, we’re celebrating the quiet skill that comes from doing something carefully, over and over, until your hands begin to know more than your thoughts. It feels right: a gentle return to focus and calm attention before the world speeds up again.

Both coffees come from Huehuetenango, Guatemala, where high mountain air and cool nights create ideal conditions for slow, deliberate craft. Here, everything moves like clockwork. Ripe cherries are picked at their peak, fermented for just the right number of hours, washed clean, and dried patiently in the sun. Each motion depends on the last, and every decision shapes the clarity in the cup.

That rhythm defines producers Aurelio Villatoro and Arcenio Castillo. Their work is careful but unhurried, the result of years spent learning their land’s timing and temper. Over time, repetition becomes intuition, and precision turns into something almost musical.

In the cup, you can taste that balance: clean sweetness, gentle structure, and a calm confidence that only steady hands can create.

The Art

Peace

Luis Mendo

When Luis Mendo moved from Amsterdam to Japan, he also shifted from two decades of magazine design into a new life of drawing. The change wasn’t sudden. It was a slow, steady exploration until his warm, “digital analog” style emerged, along with a way of catching the warmth and charm in ordinary moments most people would pass by.

Peace drops us into one of those moments: a studio mid-flow, light drifting in, papers wherever they land, a cup of coffee letting off a little steam. It’s a space filled with the kind of focus that feels like its own small shelter, where your hands take over and the rest of the world steps back.

We’ll take any reminder of how to nurture a bit of peace when the chaos inevitably comes calling. This one’s a keeper: let yourself get absorbed in something familiar and take it at your own pace.
